On October 22, 1999 STARGUIDE was launched on Darren Sumner personal web space. By the next year STARGUIDE moved to SciFiGuide.net where other series were covered such as Farscape, Babylon 5, Andromeda, and Star Trek. With a vision for the future, a Stargate centered site was launched called GateWorld.net and STARGUIDE was reduced to episode guides.

Over the years GateWorld has grown into a extremely popular and well respected Stargate website. In 2003 David Read joined GateWorld as co-editor. Thank you Darren Sumner and David Read for everything! For more information on GateWorld's history go to http://www.gateworld.net/site_history.shtml

There is a thread at http://forum.gateworld.net/threads/77518-Happy-11th-Birthday-Gateworld where you can leave birthday wishes.

This was originally a response that I wrote to someone that said that I wasn't a "real" Stargate SG-1 fan because my favorite character and favorite fanish paring wasn't the same as theirs and that you have to pick one Stargate show (SG1, SGA, or SGU) and hate the others to be a true fan.  After I wrote this I remembered that debating with someone with that mentality is a waste of time.  Recently, I was writing a comment about why I like Sam Carter and remembered this so I beta'ed myself (can you do that?) and here it is.

True Stargate Fan?

I started watching Stargate SG-1 because I like realistic, futuristic, space operas (Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5).  I stayed for Sam Carter.  I am a woman who worked for the Navy as an engineer/computer programmer.  I was an overachiever in school.  If I had a choice I would be tall, thin, and blond.  Oh, and I am an instructor at self-defense, martial arts, and weapons (4th degree black belt in TaeKwonDo - KumDo) and a crack shot with a gun.  Sam was the closest any TV/movie character came to someone I could identify with.  I know I can't really be Sam Carter but it is more likely than Spiderman (woman, scared of spiders, scared of heights, allergic to spandex).

I was never fanatical about Stargate Atlantis.  I would sometimes watch because it was on right after SG-1 but never just sat down to watch it unless it was a crossover episode.  That was until Sam took over Atlantis.

I also really like Stargate Universe.  I know that the over zealous militant Stargate fans seem to think that you need to pick just one Stargate show but I would challenge anyone that says that I can’t be fanatical über Stargate SG-1 fan and also like SGU.  I read a ridiculous amount of fanfic to the point that when I find something that isn't new that I haven't read it is a shock.  I am your go to girl if you are looking for ANY SG-1 fic or author.  I have beta'ed for more that 25 authors and in most cases repeatedly.  I attend two Stargate Cons per year (Creation Vancouver and Chicago) and used to go to the New Jersey Stargate Creation Con before it was discontinued.  I go to other Cons as per what Stargate actor is going to be there.  I didn’t realize how many Stargate shirts I owned until recently when I was packing for a Stargate Con and I asked my daughter to grab all my Stargate shirts so I could choose.  There was over two dozen.  I have copies of all the scripts/transcripts from the MGM website (they have since taken them down) that took me a week to download.  I own all of the DVDs, audio dramas, and most of the books (can't get some because they are out of print).  I even own a bunch of the comic books.  I bid on the prop auctions (but I unfortunately don't have a big enough budget to win).  I promote, inform, blog, support, write articles, do research, etc on Stargate and any Stargate info I come across I distribute (usually I pass it to morjana and/or GateWorld).

So, yea, I'm not a real fan.

Jacob: [from trailer] This is scientifically possible!
Nick: Tell us how it's scientifically possible, Professor Hawking.
Jacob: I will, 'cause I write Stargate fan fiction; this is my bread and butter, man!
Nick: Oh my God, I seriously almost passed out you're such a dork.

The movie is called Hot Tub Time Machine.

Watch the trailer (which includes the above quote): http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi1573716505/

This just is further proof that much of fanfic is higher quality than published books and movies.

Amanda Tapping hosted 2 days of the Team Welcoming Cermony.  Amanda Tapping is Sam Carter on Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Stargate Universe and Helen Magnus on Sanctuary.  Ingrid Kavelaars hosted day 3 and played Major Erin Gant on Stargate SG-1.

"We have Amanda Tapping for 2 days which is awesome! She is from Vancouver and best known for her role on Stargate. I didn't watch the show so I don't know who she was, however, it's got quite a cult following. She's even hosted the Gemini awards..and for my American friends, that's the equivalent to your Emmy's I suppose. I am dealing with her directly and she is a joy to work with."

"I am officially a fan of Amanda Tapping now. In fact, there's about a dozen of us who have girl crushes on her. She's fantastic! and today, HER friend Ingrid Kavelaars is hosting for us. She's hot and awesome! I met her last night at the gate when our driver picked her up at the airport and we hung out and had a brief rehearsal and then I drove her to her hotel. She hugged me goodbye. She's adorable. She's on "V" which I've only seen once, and she used to be on "Whistler" and she's a Genie award winner too."

Amanda was our first host for today's first ceremony with Team Lithuania and she was fantastic! Can't wait for her to come back tomorrow!! (photo by fulfilled69)

If anyone has a better video clip or photos, let me know. Has anyone spotted any other Stargate or Sanctuary people at the Olympics?

A friend of mine who is a fanfic writer posed this question, "Stargate canon question giving me grief...How long would it take for the Prometheus to travel to Abydos with the engines modified with Asgard technology?"

Well here is my answer.  I welcome any input on this.

In "Prometheus Unbound" (SG1 812), when the Prometheus was on route to Atlantis, they picked up a distress call.  The technician tells them that the location is "Just over 50 light years off our designated route. We could be there in 20 minutes."

That would mean that they could travel 150 light years per hour.

50 ly * 60 min
-------------------         =     150 ly/hour
20 min * 1 hour

In the series says that Atlantis is in the Pegasus Galaxy.  In the real world there are two: Pegasus Dwarf Irregular Galaxy and Pegasus Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy.  In "The Return" (SGA 310), Landry states, "When traveling almost three million light-years, I'm not so sure there's such a thing as 'late.'" talking about the distance between the Pegasus and Milky Way galaxies, suggesting that the series takes place in the Pegasus Dwarf Irregular Galaxy, the real distance for this is estimated to be 3.0 ± 0.1 Mly (2,900,000 to 3,100,000 light years).

In "The Intruder" (SGA 202), Weir comments to Sheppard, "having to spend 18 days cooped up on this ship to get back" referring to traveling  from Earth to Atlantis by the Daedalus.  In "Moebius Part One" (SG1 819), Carter says, "The Daedalus. It has a few advantages over the Prometheus. The more advanced alien technologies were integrated into the original design rather than tacked on after the fact."

Now with the distance to the Pegasus being 3,000,000 and the trip taking 18 days, that calculates to 6944 light years per hour.

3000000 ly * 1 day
-------------------------         =  6944.4444 ly / hour
18 days * 24 hours

That is a large difference from 150 light years per hour.  Maybe the difference is that on the Prometheus the had the hyperdrive added on and the Daedalus is was designed with it.  Or, in "Prometheus Unbound" (SG1 812), it was a short distance so they didn't use the hyperdrive.

I could not find a distance to Abydos.  At http://forums.spacebattles.com/showthread.php?t=144248 someone guessed Abydos to be 300 light years but did not tell how they arrived at this.  Earlier in the thread there was mention that stargate positions should be able to be calculated since the gate address used constellations to fix the position of the stargate.  The use of 6 constellations to get a exact position is a terrible method to used.  Constellations are actually 3 dimensions.  We perceive them from Earth in 2D but in reality that stars may not be anywhere near each other.  They would be different from different solar systems.  What place in the constellation do you use for you initiating point.

Using 300 ly as the distance to Abydos it would be 2 hours on Prometheus or 2.592 minutes on Daedalus.

300 ly * 1 hour
-------------------         = 2 hours on Prometheus
     1 * 150 ly

300 ly * 18 days * 24 hours * 60 min
--------------------------------------------------        = 2.592 minutes on Daedalus
    1 * 3000000 ly * 1 day * 1 hour

Now being fanfic, you can use anything that you want.  Also keep in mind that if your story takes place after the episode "Ethon" (SG1 915), the Prometheus was destroyed in this episode.

(added the following - edit 4/27/2009)

Also, if the Abydonians are alive and living on Abydos, the fanfic must take place before  "Full Circle" (SG1 622).

And if you want to talk about the original movie...

If the planet from the original "Stargate" movie is Abydos (the planet is never named), the one in the Kaliam galaxy, the one that Catherine states, "It's on the other side of the...known universe," we can assume it is billions of light years away.  I have seen places on the internet that state that Kaliam from the Stargate Movie is billions of light years away but it is not in the actual movie or the official production notes.  Well according to a 2004 article titled "New study super-sizes the universe" at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5051818/ the width of the universe is estimated to be 156 billion light years.

For the Daedalus to go 1 billion light years, it would take 16.4 years.

1000000000 ly * 18 days * 1 year
--------------------------------------------     = 16.4271 years
1 * 3000000 ly * 365.25 days

For the Daedalus to go from one side of the universe to the other, it would take 2562.4 years.

156000000000 ly * 18 days * 1 year
-----------------------------------------------     = 2562.3684 years = 2562 years 229.5 days
1 * 3000000 ly * 365.25 days

The Deadalus would never there even with the fact that it would be less than 2562 years because we are not at the edge of the universe.  I could not find a number to use that shows where were are in relation to the edges of the universe.  The calculation was how long it would take to get from one side of the universe to the other.  Now, the quote about the Kaliam galaxy was, "It's on the other side of the...known universe." Now the calculated size of the Universe is 156 billion light years, but I would not call that the "known universe" I would think that was the observable universe which has a radius of 46.5 billion light years with us being in the center (meaning the the diameter of the observable universe is 93 billion light years). The time it would take to get to the edge of the observable universe is 764 years and that still would mean that they would never get there.

46500000000 ly * 18 days * 1 year
-----------------------------------------------     = 763.8604 years = 763 years 314.25 days
1 * 3000000 ly * 365.25 days

The real Stargate

Last night I was out with my astronomy club. I thought one of the guys were teasing me when they showed me an asterism (star cluster) they called the Stargate. It wasn't on my chart or any of their charts so I looked it up on the internet today. It wasn't named after Stargate SG-1 but after the Stargate used in Buck Rogers.   (For more info go to: http://platformx.sourceforge.net/Name/index.html)
